Stewardship Plans


The USDA Forest Service and State Foresters are responsible for promoting wise management of non-industrial private lands throughout the nation. They accomplish this by administering what is known as the Forest Stewardship Program (FSP). The FSP provides educational, technical and financial assistance to private landowners to promote sustainable forest management practices. To participate in this program, landowners must have a certified Landowner Forest Stewardship Plan (LFSP) for their property. DES can provide you with a LFSP that will document the current forest health and productivity of your land, the desired future condition of the land based on your goals, and recommended forest management practices to achieve the condition you desire. The Forest Land Enhancement Program (FLEP) was authorized as a part of Title VIII of the 2002 Farm Bill (Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002). This program is a companion to the FSP and has been established to promote sustainable forest management practices on non-industrial private forest lands by offering financial assistance to private landowners. DES can assist you in applying for FLEP cost-share funds to help pay for the preparation of a Landowner Forest Stewardship Plan and the costs of implementing it.
